California agency grant workflows
Grant-management software work for a California state agency, through Linean. An engagement centered on an operational process with applications, reviews, and records.
- Application and supporting records
- Review and decision
- Follow-up and reporting
The operational problem
A grant process connects an application to a review, a decision, and later reporting. People need to understand what they are reviewing, which record is current, and who can act next. Software has to make those transitions understandable to the people doing the work.
My contribution
Through Linean, I contributed to grant-management software for a California state agency. The work gave me experience with the relationship between an agency’s process and its software.
My Linean engagement ran from October 2025 through September 2026 and is finished. I describe my contribution here at a broad level to keep the client’s implementation private.
What I’d examine in a similar workflow
- Ownership: which person or role has the next action, and how an application returns for clarification.
- Permissions: who can view an application, change its contents, or record a decision.
- Record history: how a reviewer knows what changed and which version supported a decision.
- Exceptions: what happens when information is incomplete, a review stalls, or a decision must be revisited.
- Handoff: what staff need to operate the process after a change.
These are questions for scoping a new engagement, rather than a list of verified features from this client’s system.
Engagement status
Completed engagement. My work through Linean is finished. The agency identity and internal artifacts remain private, and the client’s release status is not stated here.
For a similar project, the first useful step is to walk through one application and identify a small change with acceptance criteria the team can evaluate.
